Hiring the Best Staff for a Busy Restaurant:
How do you get the best employees that will be dedicated, hard working, trustworthy and an asset to you, your food, your business, your team and your customers? It's a tall order and one you should take seriously. Here's an idea to help find the best restaurant workers:
Place an ad in your local newspaper's classified section of help wanted. Something similar to this:
'Growing restaurant is holding an open interview day on ___ day, from _____ time. We're looking for energetic, enthusiastic chefs, cooks, bakers, dishwashers, servers, bartenders and a host/hostess. All interested parties are encouraged to apply with resume and prepared for an interview.'
Have plenty of employee job applications on hand and ready, W-4's and all your other essential paperwork for employees ready to fill out. You'll be surprised at how many you'll go through on an open interview day. We make sure to have each employee fill out the application on site instead of taking it with them, this assures us that they can read or write - sadly not everyone can.
We've been surprised by the huge turnout of people looking for a job that arrive for these open interview days. We hold them mid week if possible and for several hours at a time such as 2pm to 5pm to allow as many people the opportunity to get there. We make sure to have several of our owners/key managers on site to talk with the prospective employees and to do interviews.
If you've never done this, please consider it as a good option to fill employee vacancies before your busy season starts. This allows more time to get them acquainted with your routine, your menu, your rules, your customers and will be spot on in busy times.
This open interview process works to help you see the most amount of people on one day as possible, allows potential employees to see your restaurant/hotel or other business to get a tour and even if not hired, they are potential new customers.
You have the option to hire on site right then or do a background check or at least check their references if that's your policy.
Have your ever held an open interview day? How did it go? Did you find your key employees? Thanks for sharing in the comments for our readers.
Cheers!
