Dining Room Staff Interview Sample for Servers/ Bartenders/ Bussers and Food Runners


Interviewing your dining room servers and staff is an important part of creating the team of workers you want in your restaurant. You want to find the best qualified servers and bartenders if you hope to be successful in your restaurant or bar. Do you need help learning how to interview and find the best candidate for the job?  What behaviors and non verbal communication should you pay attention to?
Take the time for a proper face to face interview with these twenty key sample interview questions to keep  in mind to help you learn more about the candidates and choose the best person for the position you are seeking. 

   Use these questions/ideas to determine the most qualified restaurant candidates or create your own based on what we have included here.

server/ bartender/ bus person or food runner:

How long have you worked in the restaurant/hospitality industry?

What do you enjoy most about working in a restaurant?

Where was the last restaurant that you worked?

Why would you like to begin working at our restaurant?

Have you ever eaten at our restaurant?
  If so, what did you enjoy the most?
  What improvements could have been made to make your experience even better?

  If not, why haven't you eaten here in the past?
What caused you to want to leave your last place of employment?

How would you react if a coworker said something mean or rude to you?

What would you do if you saw a coworker not following the rules and policies of the business?

Have you ever seen a coworker stealing or cheating at work?
  If so, how did you react?

Have you ever experienced frustration at work?
  If so, how do you deal with frustrations? 

How would you react to an unhappy customer?

How would you describe the best restaurant manager?

What would you do if you witnessed any wrongdoing in the restaurant?

Are you familiar with wine service?

How do you keep a busy bar running smoothly?

What POS systems are you familiar with?

What might make you quit your employment with us?

Have you ever been terminated from a job?
   If so, why.

What would I learn from checking your prior work references?

Would you be comfortable in our uniform?

   (Make sure you describe the uniform policy, type of pant/skirt/shirt, shoes, hair, nails, aprons, tattoo policy)


         Describe the conditions of the workplace, key policies and procedures such as probation period, cell phone use, timeliness of work schedule including weekends or holidays, call off procedure, pay amount, benefit package, tips, tipout


Behaviors and answers to keep in mind while interviewing dining room staff:
   (You can give each item a score and tabulate it with the above answers to choose the best candidates)

1. Takes pride in appearance and arrived for the interview neat and clean
2. Was on time for the interview
3. Looked relaxed in answering questions

4. Smiled – let his/her personality show
5. Gave appropriate examples

6. Was enthusiastic

7. Thought about each question before answering

9. Was clear and concise in answers

10. Showed understanding of the job and role

At the end of the interview, always thank the potential employee and then either offer a job or allow time to contact references and give the interviewee a time frame of when you'll get back to them.
